Senior Reactor Operator
Industry: Energy
Area: Nuclear
Senior Reactor Operators/Supervisors are responsible for the performance of a specific plant system, optimizing plant capacity by ensuring that their respective plant system is enhancing rather than constraining output. They oversee plant performance and cost data--analyzing preventive and predictive maintenance tasks, surveillance tests, equipment hours and repair parts availability--and recommend and implement design changes.
Work Settings
A nuclear power plant is not all that different from coal, oil, or gas fired plants. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), part of our government, licenses the use of nuclear material and inspects users to make sure they follow the rules for safety.
Education
A Bachelor's degree in engineering or science, 1 year experience and a Senior Reactor Operator license is required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Job Outlook
System Engineers are expected to have employment growth about as fast as the average for all occupations though 2014.
Salary
$50,000 to $80,000 depending on location.
Work Schedule
Many engineers work a standard 40-hour week. At times, deadlines or design standards may bring extra pressure to a job, requiring engineers to work longer hours.
