Cardiac monitoring technicians monitor patients' heart rhythms, and inform nurses of important physiological changes. They monitor up to 32 patients at a time and have direct and instant audio and visual contact with patients and nurses.

Work Settings

A typical 8-hour shift would include patient preparation, monitoring physiological parameters of patients, care and maintenance of cardiac equipment and communication with nursing staff, physicians, and referring physicians.


High school diploma. There is a training program, which includes 8-12 weeks of classroom training and clinical on-the-job training.

Job Outlook

Numerous job openings for will arise from a combination of fast employment growth and high replacement needs.


General medical and surgical hospitals - $10.44/hour Nursing care facilities - $9.86/hour Community care facilities for the elderly - $9.56/hour

Work Schedule

Most work about 40 hours a week, but, because patients need care 24 hours a day, some work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Many work part time.
