Many radiology departments employ aides to assist with the nontechnical, nonmedical aspects of patient care. Aides can enhance patient care and improve department productivity when they receive adequate training and are properly supervised for the services they provide. However, the role of the R.T. aide has never been formalized as part of the career path in radiologic technology. A few of the duties that would be appropriate for an aide in the radiology department are: Check rooms at the beginning and end of imaging procedures for cleanliness and patient comfort.Stock rooms with supplies as necessary. Scan patient information into a PACS or computed radiography system prior to an exam. Greet patients and their family members. Escort patients to dressing rooms and instruct them in how to prepare for their examination. Help transfer patients onto the exam table. Provide blankets, pillows and other comfort items for the patient.Develop films for the technologist during the exam, or help file and retrieve images digitally in a PACS environment. Transport patients between clinical areas. Transport films and files between clinical areas. Process paperwork and assist with clerical responsibilities in the department.

Work Settings

Radiology Aides work in normal patient care environment with need for concentration and attention to detail.

Education

Work requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions generally acquired through a partial high school education.
