Visitor Information Center Staff - The first place many visitors stop is the tourism/visitor information center. Workers in tourism and visitor information centers are responsible for greeting visitors and making them feel welcome. They respond to visitors’ inquiries about local attractions and or assist/advise visitors in planning the time they will spend in the region. Workers in these centers must be able to work nights and weekends. Average wage $10-$12/hr.

Local Tour Guide/Receptive Operator - Develops and markets tours of the region. These tours range from bus tours for seniors to bicycle tours for special groups. They are responsible for all the details of the tour including arranging accommodations and meals, transportation, selecting which attractions to visit. They must follow market trends in order to produce a saleable product. This includes identifying the customer, their interests and pinpointing their travel preferences. Average salary $23,000/yr.

Bachelors Degree or Higher

Tourism Trainer/Educator - Develops, designs and delivers educational programs to people working in the tourism industry and or those seeking careers in the industry. They research the latest tourism trends and developments in the field and disseminate this information through training/education. The Tourism Trainer/Educator serves a professional tourism resource to everyone in the tourism industry. Average salary $20,000-$60,000/yr.

Travel Writer/Photographer - Propose a topic or are assigned one, often by an editor or publisher. They gather information about the topic through personal observation, library and Internet research, and interviews. Writers then select the material they want to use, organize it, and use the written word to express ideas and convey information. Travel Photographers need both technical expertise and creativity. Producing a successful picture requires choosing and presenting a subject to achieve a particular effect, and selecting the appropriate equipment. Many writers and photographers work on a freelance basis.  Average salary $30,000/yr.
