Employees in this position operate boilers to generate steam efficiently, following generally standardized procedures. They interpret readings of meters, gauges etc and take proper action to meet varying steam load as well as take action in case of emergency. They make temporary repairs and test and treat boiler water keeping simple records.
Work Settings
Engine rooms, power plants, boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, and electrical rooms usually are clean and well lighted. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.
Education
Boiler operators usually acquire their skills through a formal apprenticeship program or through on-the-job training supplemented by courses at a trade or technical school.
Salary
Average hourly earnings in CNY in 2005 were $15.15/hour. The bottom quartile was $11.62 and the top quartile was $15.96.
