Advice I would give to someone interested in this job:
Work on your math skills, since electrical work is all about the math. I got into the field through installing car audio and working on my skills through school. My father is an electrician.

Employees in this position fill job descriptions that vary from simple to complex and complicated electrical equipment and situations. In general electricians layout, install and maintain a wide variety of electrical equipment, such as automatic electrical or electronic controls, large distribution panels, etc. Make new installations from prints and instructions; diagnose and correct trouble on installations. Work from wiring diagrams and schematic drawings, some of which are intricate. Note: electricians perform their skill 100% of the time.

Work Settings

Entire facility, including office and manufacturing floor. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.


Electricians usually acquire their skills through a formal apprenticeship program or through on-the-job training supplemented by courses at a trade or technical school.
