Facilities Maintenance/Trades

There are three levels of Facilities Maintenance personnel all requiring some level of expertise in the trades. Level I employees perform routine maintenance work under close supervision to maintain and service structures, simple electric controls, pluming, heating and air conditioning systems and make minor repairs on equipment and facilities. Level II employees perform a wide variety of complex maintenance work to maintain and/or repair complicated structures, electrical and electronic systems, machine shop equipment, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems. Level III employees perform diversified maintenance work to maintain and service electrical systems, machines and equipment, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems, buildings and facilities, etc. They also supervise lower grade maintenance personnel.

Work Settings

Entire facility, including office and manufacturing floor. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.

Education

Facilities Maintenance/Trades usually acquire their on-the-job training supplemented by courses at a trade or technical school.

Salary

Average hourly earnings in 2005 ranged from $13.64/hour to $22.86/hour.
