Employees in this position fill job descriptions that vary from simple to complex and complicated maintenance, repair and problem solving. Maintain, repair, and rebuild machine tools, machine tool auxiliaries and mechanisms, from standard tooling such as clutches, couplings, drill checks, coolant pumps, and tapping heads to more complicated machine tools such as horizontal boring machines, automatic screw machines, and large special purpose machine tools. Replace worn and broken parts. Diagnose and remedy trouble and determine repairs necessary. Depending upon the position employees will perform machine operations to make simple replacement parts or tear down and reassemble intricate mechanisms. For advanced positions high degree of skill required in fitting of bearings, spindles, scraping of ways. May lay-out and perform difficult machining operations on replacement parts.
Work Settings
Manufacturing floor or tool room setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.
Education
High school diploma or GED; technical education and 4 years job related experience
