Employees in this position install and maintain complete low and high pressure piping installations for connecting a wide variety of steam, gas, air, and hydraulic equipment, such as compressors, accumulators, hydraulic systems, vacuum pumps, boilers, etc., joining pipes by any conventional means. Maintain sprinkler system, dry and divisional valves. Diagnose and remedy trouble. May lay-out work.
Work Settings
Manufacturing floor or tool room setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.
Education
Pipe-fitters/plumbers usually acquire their skills through a formal apprenticeship program or through on-the-job training supplemented by courses at a trade or technical school.
