Operate and control equipment to decontaminate, neutralize, and dispose of waste liquids, acids, alkalis, etc. from processing operations. Monitor flow rates, reclaim precious metals from collectors, replace filters and related items. Keep records, charts and other data used to compile reports to state and federal agencies. Take samples, test residue and liquids to determine degree of acidity or alkalinity in liquid using pH meter. Operate heat evaporation system, observe gauges and adjust controls to maintain steam pressure, temperature, and liquid at specified levels. Record data such as number of gallons of waste pumped or reduced by heat exchange unit.
Work Settings
Manufacturing floor. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.
Education
Training in vocational schools, related on- the-job experience, or an associate's degree. Some may require a bachelor's degree
