Coat metal parts and articles with a layer of decorative or protective metal such as copper, silver, nickel, or chromium. Also may work for printed circuit board manufacturers. Prepare and maintain plating solutions by cleaning, preparing and de-scaling surfaces of parts or articles with cleaning solutions such as acids or alkalis, or by using blasting cabinets, to mask areas not to be plated with waxes, lacquers or resistant adhesive tapes, to place parts, either separately or in batches, in fixtures, jigs or racks, and dip them in plating solutions or use selective brush plating, to set and adjust controls to pass the required electric current between anodes and cathodes, depending on the thickness of plating required, to examine articles or parts to check the progress of plating and the quality of finish, to check instruments, adjust the current flow, and add water or other materials to maintain the mixture and level of cleaning, rinsing and plating solutions, and to remove parts or articles at completion of plating and rinse and dry them by hand or machine, then remove masking substances from articles.

Work Settings

Manufacturing floor setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.


Requires technical training and 1-2 years job related experience
