Prepares design, redesign or design changes of products, machines and/or equipment from specific instructions furnished by supervisors or engineers, allowing some latitude for independent judgment, but following precedents or standards for more important features. Requires application of sound knowledge of materials, manufacturing methods, and processes (i.e., correctness of proportions, consideration of stresses, speeds, weights, etc.) to insure completion of designs that are practical, economical and satisfy operating requirements.
Work Settings
Office and manufacturing floor settings. The average workweek is 40 hours. While many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day, this position usually works during first shift.
Education
Training in vocational schools, related on- the-job experience, or an associate's degree. Some positions may require a bachelor's degree.
