Plan program to control machining of parts by automatic machine tools utilizing tape or disk. Analyze blueprints and drawings to determine part dimensions and machining configurations. Determine suitability of part for machining by automatic machines.

Plan program to control machining of parts by automatic machine tools utilizing tape or disk. Analyze blueprints and drawings to determine part dimensions and machining configurations. Determine suitability of part for machining by automatic machines. Determine type and size of tooling according to stock hardness and final product shape. Locate position of stock on machine fixture, machining start point or tool set point, and change points by three dimensional coordinates. Draw sketches of part to plan number, location and direction of tool paths. Calculate radii including complex, irregular curves using computer assistance. Prepare instructions to direct Operators in downloading program onto tape or disk controls and in preparing machine and tools for operation. Match tape or disk program to written plans. Observe machining of first part to verify programming accuracy.
Work Settings
Manufacturing floor setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. While many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day, this position usually works during first shift.
Education
BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, preferred Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering Or Equivalent manufacturing / programming experience with SME Manufacturing Engineering Certification
