There are various levels of Machinists/Machine Operators depending on the type of machine, the complexity of the tasks performed and the number of different machines under the operator's control. Operators plan and perform set-up and machining operations on various machine shop equipment such as engines or turret lathes, radial or spindle drills, boring mills, planers, shapers, surface grinders, punch presses, shear operations and milling machines. They work to very close tolerances and selects speeds, feeds, and tools for varying materials and conditions. They may grind or replaces tools. They also may perform progressive machining, floor erecting and assembly operations on apparatus, equipment, and experimental and development work.
Work Settings
Manufacturing floor setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. Shift work and overtime is common. Many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day.
Education
High school diploma or GED; plus job related experience
