Designs complicated dies, tools, gauges, jig and fixtures. Works from process sheets and parts prints. Studies parts prints and operation sheets to design tooling for maximum economy of operation consistent with machine limitations, quantities to be produced and close tolerance specifications. Requires thorough knowledge of manufacturing methods and machine shop practices, a sufficient knowledge of mathematics to solve design problems, the ability to originate ideas and incorporate them into design. May utilize computer aided design techniques to perform applicable design work.
Work Settings
Office and manufacturing floor setting. The average workweek is 40 hours. While many manufacturers operate 24 hours/day, this position usually works during first shift.
Education
Will normally have 2 years of machine shop and/or tool and die experience and either formal engineering education or tool design experience.
